Pixar spent nearly three years developing two unique software systems for Merida’s hair: one program coordinated the movement of 1,500 separate curls, the other created a seamless relationship between Merida’s hair and her movements.
And they did a phenomenal job!
My friend turned to me upon seeing Merida’s hair in all it’s glory and said that she wanted to dye my hair and dress me as Merida for Halloween. To be fair, my hair is sort of a brown version of this. So many messy curls.
